Floor solution for Garment Factory

TACT staff have been shown around a garment factory in Scandinavia where the Premium tiles have been in use for 15 years.

The factory owner is so pleased with the floor that he specified the same finish for his new extension. He told us that the tiles helped to keep dust and lint onto the floor surface, making for a cleaner working area. The floor is vacuumed regularly, wiped clean occasionally and scrubbed with an industrial cleaner annually. The surface looked as good as new!

Sports Hall Playing Surface Vandalised

The new TactTiles Multi-Sport sports hall floor surface in Horley was recently attacked and severely damaged by vandals using hammers or iron bars. Within 48 hours TACT had attended site and repaired the damage by replacing individual tiles.

The facility was back into full operation 6 hours later. The staff were amazed that the TactTiles floor could be repaired so quickly and without any loss of revenue to the facility. It is the unique construction of the TactTiles that allows for this simple and rapid repair or replacement if local damage occurs.

The very easiest and long-term Hopscotch play areas can be included in a TactTiles Pedestrian playground area. We have incorporated many hopscotch areas into play areas for schools, nurseries & playgroups. We can incorporate many alaphabetical and numerical elements for stimulating educational fun. Additional 10 x 10 maths boards or chess boards can also be incorporated into the overall design of a TactTiles safer play surface.

Scouts get a brand new Sports Hall @ Blackwell Court

The world famous International Scout Centre at Blackwell Court in Worcestershire had on the site an old barn with a dusting concrete floor. The management wanted to up-graded this building from a scouting 'Dry Shelter' to an all-purpose Multi-Use Games Area meeting modern standards. The brief was for an anti-slip surface capable of being played upon in any type of footwear.

We were also asked 'what's it like with arrows?' as archery is a popular sport at Blackwell Court. The answer was 'we don't know sir!' but we find that a TactTiles floor can stand up to arrows as well as everything else the Scouts throw at it. The new surface was installed within 3 days including the marking out of all the lines.

Tact were able to meet all the client's criteria including their very tight budget. There is no other surface on the UK market which is so durable, pleasant to play on and requires virtually nil maintenance throughout its expected life of 20 years.

Strong stable colours make this surface an all-round winner for any hall surfacing project. Client was so delighted he has ordered TactTiles Metro for the shower block to give better grip to the quarry tiled floor and improve the ambience. Be a good scout: be prepared - with TactTiles flooring and sports surfaces.

Multi-Sport flooring surfaces and pitches have never been so easy to install, maintain and keep as new with the TactTiles Multi-Sport surface. Multi-Sport surfaces can even be used for roller blading and in-line hockey; that's how tough they are - yet they look great and are very pleasant to walk & play on.

Tact are able to install even their top grade Multi-Sport surface for around £30.00/sq. metre net - including delivery, installation & marking out pitch or court lines in whatever configuration you desire.

Tennis courts and normal play MUGA pitch surfaces require their own grade of TactTiles and these are at a lower £/sq.m. rate than the roller-blading grade.

Good strong stable colours available, combine to make your sports hall look brilliant for years to come with virtually no maintenance.

MUGA fun at Blackwell Court

The new Multi-Sport TactTiles floor at Blackwell Court certainly impressed these Scouts when playing a fun game of Basketball during the opening of the new sports hall complex. This hall is used for general scouts activities especially when the weather is wet, including 5-a-Side Football, Basketball, Volleyball and Archery.

In addition, grown up 'scout-helpers' (mums & dads) get stuck into a fun game of Uni-Hock on the new TactTiles Multi-Sport floor. The Centre Manager, Mr Gareth Roberts, states ..'if it wasn't for TactTiles I doubt if we could have afforded a sports floor as good as this....we are really impressed with the performance under wet conditions.'

When they were having problems with the disabled access ramps into the restaurant area they decided to use TactTiles again.

The plywood ramps were coated to prevent further deterioration and then Premium TactTiles were installed over the top, providing a smart looking, free draining non slip flooring surface. All the edges were finished with high visibility yellow Edgetiles.

Chris told the Tact team they had been trying to install a play area for many years, but the cost had always proved too high. TactTiles solution means that everybody at the school - staff included are enjoying a brighter and safer future with TactTiles Pedestrian grade surface. TactTiles have levelled off an uneven and unsafe play area and given the entire area a really superb look.

Flooring Challenge At Southern Education & Library Board

The task of resurfacing a large library floor is huge. The Armagh library facility managers were looking to install a safer surface with the minimum disruption to the facility. The moving of the shelves with books in-situ was already solved, but what surface could take the weight of all this movement, whilst still allowing the flooring surface process to progress

The management contacted Tact Specialist Flooring and were recommended to trial the Piazza Grade surface. A small area was purchased and thoroughly tested.

The library staff were extremely comfortable with the choice and the Facility Manager could see what a boon this would be with the ease of installation and fitting.

The entire library floor was then purchased to be installed with local staff and to cause the minimum upset to the library and its many happy customers. The manager said TactTiles were the most cost effective and rapid flooring system he could find and would have no hesitation recommending them for any other library having to carry out a similar floor refurbishment operation.

The main concern for most Librarians is the anti-fatigue factor of a flooring finish. Library staff have to stand for many hours sorting and cataloguing books. The Armagh library staff were concerned with benefits for TactTiles and so chose to trial an area first. Needless to say the trial was a total success and the entire refurb project saved hundreds of manhours. A total area of 1200 square metres have been rejuvenated with this innovative modular system.

Not only are staff delighted with the looks of the Piazza tiles, but also how they perform from their health and welfare point of view.

PVC solid floor tiles vs. Polypropylene raised floor tiles

Plastic Interlocking Floor Tiling Systems

PVC solid flooring tiles are an ideal floor covering for many internal domestic and commercial floor applications. This type of flooring is economical and easy to lay normally ‘locking together' with inbuilt dovetailed fittings.

Polypropylene ‘raised' floor tiles are also an ideal and versatile floor covering for domestic, commercial and industrial applications both internally and externally. These tiles lock together with strong male / female fittings creating a seamless surface.

1. THE DIFFERENCE is SUBTLE but SIMPLE - CONCRETE FLOORING SCIENCE

The very difference in these 2 varying plastic surfaces is the word ‘solid' and ‘raised'.

The PVC tile lies on top of the concrete and replicates the hardness of this sub-floor. They can then trap moisture and air beneath this impermeable membrane and can cause long-term problems to the buildings structure. Check if you have a DPM layer.

The Polypropylene tile also sits on top of the concrete, but due to its unique construction and raised design it allows the foot surface to receive a ‘flexing' posture and is therefore far more comfortable to walk, stand or play upon. The open design of the polypropylene tile also allows the sub-floor to breathe naturally thereby preserving the buildings integrity.

2. SOFTER v RIGID

PVC tiles are inherently softer in feel to the hands, but are laid directly onto the floor (normally concrete) and replicate this dead drop surface.

The Polypropylene tiles are more rigid, which can sometimes be seen as a disadvantage and stronger however the flexural effect is now noted in #1 above and any fall onto these tiles results in little injury.

The Swedish Tennis Association states these tiles are ..."very good for tennis players back & leg joints"

3. IS FLATTER BETTER?

From the flat surfacing point of view the PVC tile can start to ‘curl' over time and / or heavy use (especially heavy weight traffic) causing trip hazards around the dovetail jointed edges. Also the sub-floor must be very flat and level or the joints will suffer once again.

Polypropylene tiles can take a lot of bash & crash before any joint damage occurs and really heavy weights have been used on these tiles. The tough connection method holds on in all conditions. The flexural capabilities allow these tiles to cover undulating territory admirably.

TO WASH or NOT TO WASH

PVC does stain far more readily then Polypropylene (which is commonly used for chemical storage tank building). PVC can certainly be stained by car tyres in garages and these tyre marks are permanent.

PVC tiles can be readily mopped and are seen as a cleaner option to open textured polypropylene tiles, but inevitably the cleaning water will penetrate the joints of the tiles and stagnant water will result beneath the surface causing odours and building problems as outlined in point 1 above.

Polypropylene tiles with their open raised textured surface allow for the same type of cleaning, but any waters passing beneath the surface rapidly dries out and if found to be standing or puddling can be readily removed with a wet vacuum.

A suitable chemical protective coating can be applied to the concrete floor (especially in garages or around swimming pools, changing rooms) and the polypropylene tile laid over this for ease of deep-cleaning.

TO LIFT or NOT TO LIFT?

PVC tiles may require deep-cleaning, but each and every tile requires uplifting separately and is a very heavy job to move.

Polypropylene tiles may require an occasional deep-clean, but most designers include an unzipping tool and this allows for the rapid up-lifting of this lighter weight floor into panels. A rapid and hygienic operation results.

SUMMARY

Therefore the PVC tiling system is very good in light domestic applications and the Polypropylene tile has a wider installation range.

The Polypropylene tiles start from the surface down creating various grades of surfaces for specific work, sports and domestic uses. The undersides of the Polypropylene tiles are also varied to suit the amount of flexural capabilities (soft for play areas harder for factories) required and to effect better drainage flow for wet and outdoor applications.

We have added a huge range of designs and patterns created for our existing customers onto our website files. These are in Excel format so if you cannot read these documents please contact us or phone 01458 253395 and we can send them to you in print form.

Hopscotch courts, chess boards and all sorts of numerical & alphabetical counting systems can be included in your TactTiles play area layouts. The colours introduced really excite children and they are tickled pink when they realise the fun and learning they can have on a TactTiles play surface.

Alternatively you can design your own custom pattern to suit your garden or playground using the 12 strong colours in the Pedestrian range.

Teachers love TactTiles play surfacing as they are easy care and give staff an outdoor classroom for fun learning. Around some trees and over grassed areas TactTiles are the most economic play system available with the least impact on your environment. This safer surface helps stop dirt, sand and garden mess coming into the classrooms - a real boon to cleaning.

TactTiles give you a fresh choice in your child's playing area surface. Made from factory produced polymers the tiles are inert and clean at all times. The surface TactTiles present to any playing child is really user friendly and safe in all seasons. Even where a child may fall over and scrape the skin there are no nasty sands, grits, germs or chemicals to enter the wound.

When dealing with a soil or garden based play area TactTiles create the very least impact on the surroundings. Your young person will not stay tiny forever and as they grow and move onto older pursuits you can adapt the TactTiles surface to suit their fresh requirements. From a play area in Pedestrian Grade these can be readily added to or up-graded to MultiSport Grade for serious working out in football, tennis and basketball and all other manner of games and sports.

Finally when the children have really moved on, you can easily turn your garden back into the vegetable plot you always planned for one day.

Play Areas in TactTiles require gravel or ballast stone base for drainage, laid level and flat and ‘whacked' into place. Spread 100mm of sharp sand over this drainage course and roll this flat too. A TactTiles Play Area can be installed on top. With little effort and low impact on the environment you have superb playing area surface.

Customise your play area with patterns and designs to suit your children's or your schools ambience. Tact has a barrel load of fun designs and patterns that will enhance any child's learning and create a real fun activity area.

Tact work closely with you in designing the play ground surface / layout tailoring patterns to your particular needs and requirements (even special needs and disabled pupils).

We can cope with sloping ground, dirt bowls, mud-holes, old concrete, tarmac, wooden decking, sand and gravels being able to ‘tie-in' all these surfaces as one.
Dry Changing Room Floors For Royal Lymington Yacht Club

Having successfully laid a Piazza TactTiles surface in their changing room area, The Royal Lymington Yacht Club rang the other day to order more TactTiles to extend the area into the showers.

The quote of all quotes came from the lady on the phone when she said "TactTiles are marvellous - no more wet knickers!"

If you drop your underwear onto the floor, it comes up a little damp, but no longer does it come up wet and soggy having fallen into a puddle - its a miracle."

What happens in your changing room? Why do you let your customers or club members suffer from wet clothing.

Club members or paying customers who pay a lot of money for clean facilities do not want to end up with wet knickers dropping their underwear into puddles left from the previous client or their own wet from the shower.

Wet changing room floors should be outlawed and are total waste of staff time trying to keep them clean and dry all day and every day.

Reduce your staffing costs: fit TactTiles to your changing rooms as soon possible and sit back and relax on the cleaning front.

Don't forget TactTiles equals no more wet clothing as well as no more daily drudgery of changing room cleaning.

Modular floors for rapid retro-fit answers

Modular flooring surfaces were originally designed for and developed in the exhibition & events industry. These floor surfaces rapidly lock together forming superb hard-wearing, good looking walkways, retail and commercial floors.

This revolution in modular floors entering the regular flooring market enables clients to take control of their flooring choice whilst retaining ownership of the floor throughout its service life. The selection and purchasing of this new type of floor means the Client is investing in a floor for future growth of the business/enterprise: these floors really are a business asset.

In today's rapidly changing/moving world the ability of a floor to change with business needs can result in huge savings. No longer are you literally 'stuck' with an immoveable floor covering that ends up in landfill. Modular floors can be re-assembled in a new location, readily added to on-site or altered in layout/colour/design to suit changing circumstances & market forces. The savvy business owner in rented premises knows they can take their new floor with them if the lease expires or business expansion requires a move.

Fast floor fitting can prove a real revenue winner as much depends on the timescales taken to complete new buildings or repair/renovate old ones. Lower sub-floor preparation costs and rapid install time are added benefits. It is important the sub-floor is allowed to breath naturally.

Modular floors can be readily packed up and shipped to new sites for re-assembly (Ref: British Army Sports Floor Afghanistan).

Tact can supply and fit a wide range of modular floors to suit all domestic, commercial and industrial needs. Specify your require performance criteria and Tact will quickly be able to suggest a suitable modular surface which will be rapidly laid by their own team and will cause the least disruption your operation.
TactTiles offer floor refurbishment solutions

In today's tight economic climate your options can now be limited when having to renew/renovate your flooring surface. Any building renovation has to be carefully costed and the performance of the finishing surfaces, especially the flooring is crucial to the economic success/life-cycle of the building.

Choosing a floor that is going to last and keeps your revenue stream flowing during installation and beyond is of real importance - especially in these trying economic times. Change of use in a building can lead to higher specification requirements from your flooring surface. A cleaner environment with anti-slip or anti-static properties may now be required.

Do you completely replace the current surface or do you refurbish the area?

Can you afford the disruption total floor removal will cause?

How long will you be in this building?

Can you see the area increasing in size at a later date?

Modular floors available from Tact prove their worth for renovation projects. These modular floors can refurbish the entire floor or just local areas of wear. The fact this type of floor can be laid whilst production continues or overnight when the facility is closed are further benefits to the building owner. The cost savings and the great looks of modular floors all contribute to taking a wise decision.

Removal of old vinyl or plastic sheet flooring with glue adhesion can be very damaging to the concrete sub-floor. This can prove very time consuming and costly - better to install a modular flooring system. Old ceramic tile surfaces are very dirty, noisy and again time consuming to uplift and remove.Epoxy coated/ painted floors can be ground off and re-coated, but again this is a long costly unenvironmentally friendly procedure.

Some warehouse floors have asphalt surfacing laid. With age and forklift traffic wear the surface can break out in ever increasing holes. A modular system will rapidly turn these dangerous floor holes into safe, healthy surfaces able to take the punishing regime of forklifts.

Natural floor movement and concrete slab edge tilting can prove problematic; Tact can repair with feather edging epoxy mortars and lay a new modular surface over the entire area. Surface cracking and scabbling can be repaired and a new modular surface quickly laid.

Bare concrete can be readily sealed with Tact OptiRepair coatings to prevent dusting and resist chemical attack. TactTiles can be laid quickly over this clean hygienic floor. This system is ideal for shower and changing room floor surfacing.

Industrial, Commercial, Retail or Domestic Clients all benefit from the use of Tact flooring surfaces. With the ever increasing range of specialist flooring products from Tact, we are here to meet your most stringent requirements.

The prestigious Brend Hotel Group chose Tact Enviro to advise and install the plush and safe new pool surround for their new Spa area in the Carlyon Bay Hotel, St Austell.

The style of TactTiles chosen for this beautiful swimming pool room was Piazza in Sand. TactTiles have totally up-lifted the pool room giving it a clean and hygienic look whilst keeping customer safety at the forefront.

With a tight installation schedule Tact were able to fit this large area well within time and budget. Mr Brend is now looking at further areas within his luxury hotel group to continue the TactTiles look.

Long life tennis court surface solution

The responsibility of owning a tennis court requires the surface to look good, be safe and ready for playing at all times.

TactTiles Tennis Courts give you that "treble-lifetime surface", which will last well over 20 years on a normal court. Being factory made the tiles play evenly all over the court and create a medium paced game. This surface is totally free-draining, ventilated and gives that 'sprung-floor' effect.

We know of no other tennis court surface which will last so long and look so good for many years to come. Acrylic painting of an existing asphalt / tarmac tennis court is only a short term measure and you will be spending again in maintenance in another 4-5 years. The free-draining TactTiles surface means you are quickly back on court after the heaviest of rains.

If you are installing a brand new court all you require is No. 1 base roadstone tarmac (saving money and the environment) then lay TactTiles onto this sub-base.

TactTiles give you real peace of mind, knowing that you will not have to carry out any further surface works for the next 2 decades and beyond.

Finding suitable floor coverings for a variety of outdoor environments, both for domestic and commercial settings can be limiting; constraints such as operational downtime, budgets and inclement weather all play a part in the selection process.

Modern homeowners see great value in not only improving the interiors of their homes, but increasingly are looking to revitalise all their available outdoor space, which can range from gardens and conservatories through to garages and balcony space or even swimming pools for the affluent proprietor. Sourcing the correct surface, which will continue to perform in the long-term, can be a difficult task. A variety of hardwood decking is available up and down the UK in garden centres and DIY shops. Although seemingly a perfect ‘natural’ choice, wood decking is prone to getting slippery in wet climates and should frost set in, a beautiful wood surface can become an extremely dangerous floor covering to walk on. Being a natural material, it is also essential that the wood is treated to ensure its longevity, which of course is time consuming.

Balconies in modern apartment blocks offer owners the use of an outdoor area, but it is important to select the right type of covering for these small entertainment spaces. Wood decking is a heavy option and slatted varieties ought to be avoided on balconies to prevent small items slipping through. Synthetic surfaces such as astro turf or carpet are not ideal, given their need for maintenance and their ability to grow bacteria and mould within a very short period of time. In coastal areas, it is also key to select a surface that will withstand the wind, sand, sea spray and UV rays from the sun; nature’s ability to degrade its surroundings in such environments, means that outdoor flooring choice need to be highly durable and long lasting, therefore ensuring its cost effectiveness.

Garage and workshop floors are also areas that homeowners and commercial operators are keen to improve. Options such as specialist floor paint offer a short-term solution and very quickly start to wear in terms of peeling, so maintenance of the surface soon becomes a regular activity. An epoxy resin will provide an alternative surface, however installation is not straightforward and conditions need to be exact: floor preparation, temperature, drying times and humidity are all important factors. Even taking all these factors into consideration, owners often report peeling, stains and tyre marks in high usage areas, which are difficult to repair or eradicate. Solid rubber tiles are available in a wide array of colours, but unfortunately, do not allow for easy maintenance; hosing down the floor will cause problems with damp, as water will inevitably seep through onto the sub-surface, which will mean the rubber tiles will have to be removed to allow the floor to dry properly underneath.

Another outdoor area that needs consideration in the selection process for flooring is swimming pool surrounds. Traditionally, you will find these to be constructed from ceramic tiles or paving stones, which can create a beautiful floor, if not an expensive choice. Difficulties can arise, once these types of floor surfacing started to erode or get damaged. Removing a single or section of tiles or paving slabs, without damaging unaffected areas can be challenging and the removal of bacteria laden grout can mean the swimming pool remains out of use for longer than anticipated and costs can escalate bringing it back into full working order.

Somerset based Tact Enviro Ltd specialise in innovative retro-fit flooring solutions, and their TactTile interlocking floor tiles are an ideal surface in many outdoor flooring applications, such as garages, patios, balconies and swimming pool surrounds; both for domestic homeowners and commercial operators, such as schools, leisure centres and hotels to name a few.

With the onset of Spring and warmer weather, the company sees a greater increase for outdoor flooring, in particular swimming pools. With a successful track record of pool surround refurbishments in schools, colleges, leisure centres, hotels and residential settings, their expertise in rejuvenating such environments in a short amount of time, is evident from a recent residential pool project:

The Stiff family’s swimming pool and fitness suite is housed in an attractive timber building in their garden. The pool surround area had been fitted with a synthetic carpet, but this had become rotten and dirty and was holding surplus water. The client was looking for a hygienic floor solution which was self-draining, anti-slip, hygienic and quick to install.

After weighing up all the various alternative options to be considered, it was deemed that the Piazza TactTile range would solve the existing mould and waterlogged nature of the existing covering, given TactTiles perforated design, which allows water to free drain and air to circulate, preventing any future puddle issues.

Tact organized a contract team to remove the rotten carpet; then dried the existing sub-surface in preparation for laying the new interlocking floor. The next step was to cut drainage channels into the concrete slab, followed by sealing the concrete against chemical attack with a coating of Tact PoolCoat. A timber trim to match the chalet building was fitted around the edge of the room and Piazza TactTiles in Sand were laid over the entire floor. The floor measured approximately 150 m2 and the project was completed in an impressive three days. Tact ensured an exemplary service from consultation through to removing waste materials upon project completion.

John Highnam, Sales Director, emphasises the benefits of their modular interlocking flooring systems for two of their popular applications: pool surrounds and balconies. “Ceramic tiles certainly are aesthetically pleasing in the first instance, but after a few years of use, you will experience mould growth in the grouting, deepening cracks and they can become particularly damaged by frost.”

“Our highly durable, injection moulded polypropylene TactTile floor systems offer a cost effective safe surface, which simply locks together, without any need for glues or bonding agents; you can just simply lay, click & walk!” ‘Not only are they slip resistant and have antibacterial properties in them, they are also UV resistant, ensuring the floor looks as new, even after years of use, and should any damage occur, any size section can be removed and replaced with ease.” “An added benefit is that they can be recycled at the end of their lifetime, making them environmentally sound.”

Each tile measures 378mm x 378mm; interlocking lugs on two sides connect the tiles together using a mallet, and can be taken apart as easily as being put together with an individual tile lifter or a multi zip tool to disassemble larger areas. All TactTiles surfacing can also be cut to fit using a Jigsaw or handsaw and be fitted flush or finished with bevelled edging and corner tiles for increased footfall safety. Many TactTiles feature a unique free draining, perforated top, to allow air to circulate through the surface and will prevent puddles forming, minimising any slip hazards, which is paramount in any footfall area.

Maintenance is cheap and minimal; TactTiles can easily be swept, washed and scrubbed using normal floor cleaners and rinsed with clean water. For any stubborn marking, simply apply household bleach (following manufacturers’ instructions) – leave for a few minutes and then rinse well.

TactTiles come in a variety of styles and colours, allowing for an individual bespoke design. Their most popular ranges include Piazza, Metro and Briq; available in a number of complimentary colours, which can enhance any surrounding outdoor area for a sleek, contemporary look and finish.

Interlocking floor tiles offer a premium and innovative solution as a retro-fit surface which can be either fitted DIY or via residential and commercial building contractors who specialise in outdoor flooring requirements.

Upping Their Game at Amisfield Tennis Club

1st TactTiles Tennis Court in Scotland

True community spirit came to the fore in the village of Amisfield this year, as after over 30 years of use their current tennis court needed a complete refurbishment. Fundraising began in earnest, with much success; a number of private donations and a £5,000 grant secured from South West Environmental Action Trust raised approximately half of the funds needed.

In addition, Chair Maureen Johnstone was able to secure a £10,000 grant from the Lottery Fund. A staunch advocate, Rob Stairmand worked hard with the community of a year to increase fundraising momentum, so the project could finally be given the green light.

Roy said, ‘We are an active community and have worked tirelessly to raise as much money as possible. Our chosen sports flooring provider, TactTiles, suggested a ‘Sponsor A Tile’ initiative; the response from the local community blew us away!’ The village also held a ‘Bacon Buttie & Blether Morning’ and an auction to garner more support and complete their mission.

Members of the community set about removing the old court tiles, in preparation for their TactTiles tennis court to be installed over three days. After such a magnificent summer of tennis triumph’s for Scottish hero, Andy Murray, this innovative all weather court will allow villagers to hold a ‘free for all’ Play Open Day in the Spring, with a view to support and professionally teach Amisfield School students; with plans to hold a tennis tournament during the Summer.

A highly successful Open Day was held on 13th October 2012, attended by the entire village, along with the local press to spread the good news, on this superb new rejuvenated facility.
